Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin shells that Dr. Murphy and the team attach to the fronts of your teeth for cosmetic purposes. They’re designed for a perfect fit and a natural appearance. Veneers are very thin and look natural.

Veneers are meant to treat only front teeth that don’t withstand lots of pressure in your bite. If you have a damaged or cosmetically imperfect tooth toward the back of your mouth, Dr. Murphy might recommend a crown instead.

What can veneers cover?

Veneers can conceal nearly any cosmetic flaw. Dr. Murphy might recommend veneers if you want to treat:

  • Heavy discoloration or staining
  • Worn tooth enamel
  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Oddly shaped teeth
  • Pointy teeth
  • Short or broken teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Wide gaps between teeth

If you have a single tooth that stands out as less attractive than the rest, you only need one veneer to cover it. You can get multiple veneers during a single procedure if you want to improve more than one tooth.

What’s the difference between traditional and no-prep veneers?

At Temecula Ridge Dentistry, Dr. Murphy offers two options for veneers: traditional porcelain veneers and no-prep Lumineers®:

Traditional porcelain

Traditional porcelain veneers are thin, but your teeth will need a little preparation. Before attaching them, Dr. Murphy gives you local anesthesia and removes a tiny bit of enamel.

Lumineers are extremely thin and do not require any enamel removal prior to bonding. Should you decide to remove them, you can do so without needing a new veneer to protect your tooth. Traditional porcelain veneers are not reversible in this way.

How long do veneers last?

If you take good care of them, veneers last for an average of 10 years. It’s possible for them to last for up to 20, but you can get replacements once they show signs of wear-and-tear.

To make your traditional porcelain veneers or Lumineers last for as long as possible, Dr. Murphy recommends following these steps to care for them:

  • Brushing and flossing frequently and thoroughly
  • Attending your six-month dental exams and cleanings
  • Avoiding biting into solid objects like fruit pits and hard candies
  • Avoiding using your teeth in lieu of scissors
  • Wearing a bite guard at night if you grind your teeth

Veneers aren’t porous like regular tooth enamel, so they’re much less prone to stains. Dr. Murphy makes sure they match the color of your natural teeth, and you can get a whitening treatment beforehand for added smile enhancement.
