What comes to mind when you see someone flash a stunningly bright-white smile? It might well be a combination of “How did they do that?” and “How can I do that?” You can get there too, but it’s good to know what can interfere with a white smile.
Stained teeth aren’t a good look for anyone, but you may not realize that discolored teeth make you look older even if your face looks young. You can knock years off your appearance and dramatically boost your self-confidence with professional teeth whitening.
Professional whitening is easy — you just relax in the chair and let the team at Temecula Ridge Dentistry, lead by Therese Murphy, DDS, we do all the work. And when you get right down to it, professional whitening is cost- and time-effective because it’s all done in one short office visit. We have a take-home option too.
Even if you have sensitive teeth, you can safely come in for teeth whitening because Dr. Murphy uses Opalescence™ Boost™, a top-of-the-line professional teeth whitening system. We also offer custom-fit take-home trays and a professional-grade whitening formula, that offers equally dramatic results, but will take more time.
Stained teeth make you look older because teeth naturally become darker and more discolored as you age. Over the years, the enamel covering your teeth thins out. As that happens, the layer below, called dentin, becomes more visible. Since dentin is yellow, its yellowish hue shows through thinning enamel.
Your enamel also becomes more porous as you get older. This makes it easier for pigments from foods and beverages to attach to the tooth surface. As a result, your teeth stain more quickly than in younger years.
The teeth whitening products available at your local pharmacy may do a satisfactory job if your teeth are mildly stained, but keep this in mind: Commercial products have a limited effect because their bleaching agents are weaker than professional products.
We can use the same active ingredient at a much higher concentration here in the office because we protect your tongue, mouth, and gums from the hydrogen peroxide.
There are two other big differences between professional teeth whitening and at-home bleaching: the time it takes and the results.
Most commercial whitening strips and gels are applied twice daily for 14 days. Many whitening rinses must be used regularly for three months. What results will you get for all that time, effort, and money spent on products? In two to 12 weeks (depending on the product you use), your teeth will be one or two shades lighter.
When you come in for teeth whitening, the first thing we do is assess the current shade of your teeth and determine exactly how many shades lighter you’d like to go for your new smile. Once that’s finished, you relax in the chair, and we take care of the rest.
After prepping your mouth to protect the soft tissues, we apply a layer of advanced whitening gel to your teeth. Opalescence Boost treatments don’t require bright light to activate the formula. The whitening formula is simply applied to your teeth evenly. After an hour or less, your teeth will be dramatically whiter.
