Common Causes of Yellow Teeth

You brush, floss, rinse, and repeat. Every day. Even multiple times a day. Yet you can’t get rid of that pale shade of dingy yellow on your teeth.

So, if your oral hygiene habits aren’t responsible for your not-so-pearly-white teeth, what is?

Therese Murphy, DDS, and our team at Temecula Ridge Dentistry are ready, willing, able, and eager to help you restore the brightness of your smile, or maybe even take that gleam to undiscovered levels with our in-office and take-home teeth-whitening treatments.

Then you can make the luminosity last by dealing with the cause of your yellow teeth.

By the gulp or the sip

What is your beverage du jour? Cola, coffee, tea, or dark juices throughout the day, and maybe red wine when it’s time to relax?

The dark coloring in these drinks can stain your enamel, which is the hard outer covering of your teeth. The more you subject your teeth to these beverages, the higher the likelihood of lingering stains.

More food for thought

Beyond what you drink, what you eat matters, too. Foods with a powerful hue include tomato sauce, blueberries, beets, and soy sauce. What’s good for your taste buds isn’t necessarily friendly to your teeth.

Butt out

If you’re a smoker, and your teeth are a dingy yellow, it’s likely not a coincidence. You’ve long known how nicotine in tobacco is addictive. Coupled with tar, nicotine is also what stains your teeth.

Blame yourself

Beyond your daily efforts, the brightness of your smile could come from deep within — as in, your genes. Yes, the genetically determined coloring and thickness of your enamel are factors as well.

You’re more likely to see the impact of your enamel’s thickness, or lack thereof, as you get older. Over time, the enamel begins to wear away, exposing the layer underneath called dentin.

What color is dentin? You guessed it. Yellow. So the brighter and thicker your enamel is, the longer you can keep dentin playing a supporting role rather than on center stage.

Are you feeling OK?

We ask because some medications can have the side effect of staining your teeth. It can be quite an “A list” of categories:

While many medications cause the actual discoloration, drugs used for high blood pressure can lead to dry mouth, which heightens the risk of teeth staining.

Also, people with head and neck cancers may find that their radiation and chemotherapy treatments take the luster off their teeth.

Fluoride is good, right?

When fluoride makes its way into the enamel on your teeth, it combines with calcium and phosphate to fend off the formation of cavities.

If you’re in fluoride overload, however, such as from a combination of fluoridated water, oral supplements, or fluoride in toothpastes and rinses, your teeth can lose a bit of their shine. That said, there’s no need to be afraid of fluoride — it’s a good thing. Just check with us about what types of fluoride products you or your children need so you get the right amount.
