Adjusting to Life With Dentures

When you think of dentures, you might conjure up images of uncomfortable false teeth and messy adhesives. But the truth is, dentures have the power to restore the look and function of your smile. These days, dentures can be comfortable, making you feel better about yourself and making it easier to eat and talk freely.

If you’re missing teeth, you might feel embarrassed or struggle to enjoy some of your favorite foods. Dentures can give you newfound confidence, improve your oral health, and allow you to eat and chew more easily. They’re customized medical devices to replace missing teeth.

At Temecula Ridge Dentistry, Therese Murphy, DDS and her team offer the latest in dentures and restorative dentistry. State-of-the-art dentures are life-changing, but they can take a little getting used to. The experts at Temecula Ridge Dentistry offer the following tips on adjusting to life with dentures.

Take time to get used to your new dentures

At first, dentures often feel strange inside your mouth. Set yourself up for success by setting realistic expectations for your first few days with dentures. Give yourself time to adjust and don’t get frustrated if you experience awkward speech or chewing.

Plan on eating soft foods to get used to eating with dentures while minimizing gum irritation. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help ease spots of irritation if they develop. Gradually introduce more foods as you get more comfortable with your new teeth.

With dentures, it can feel like you’re learning to talk and eat all over again. Practice talking with people you feel comfortable with, and don’t be afraid to talk to yourself or sing along with your favorite songs.

It can take a few weeks to a few months for your gums, jaw, and mouth to adjust to dentures being inside your mouth. After the first month, your muscles and jaw will be used to holding the dentures as you chew and speak.
